Tranmere Rovers Sign 34-Year-Old Midfielder On A Year Contract

The midfielder, who is closing in on his 500th league appearance, began his career at Championship side Middlesbrough after progressing through their academy.

The Redcar-born 34-year-old has played an instrumental role in his former clubs’ promotion successes, having achieved promotion from both League One and League Two, with Rotherham United, Hull City, and Bradford City.

Named in the EFL’s League Two Team of the Season and awarded Bradford City’s 2024/25 Player of the Season, the Bantams’ former captain becomes Andy Crosby’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window, bringing valuable experience and leadership to the heart of midfield. He has played the third highest number of minutes of all central midfielders in the EFL over the past three seasons.

Upon signing his contract, Smallwood, said: “I’m thrilled to sign for the club. Once Tranmere showed interest, it was something I wanted to get done quickly.
