Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank Risk Losing Star To Madrid Club Despite Renewal Attempts

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero could have played his last game for the club amid interest from Atletico Madrid, the latest reports have claimed.

Spurs won the Europa League final in May and secured Champions League football, but their poor domestic season – they finished 17th with 38 points in 2024-25 – ultimately cost Ange Postecoglou his position as boss.

Thomas Frank was poached from Brentford this week, and supporters are hoping for the former Brentford manager to begin a revamp of the playing squad.

Tottenham have been linked with Bryan Mbeumo in recent days, but while there could be a number of incomings this summer, there could also be a number of exits.

Fichajes report that central defender Romero wants to compete for major titles and sees his ambitions best served elsewhere, with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid keen on bringing him to Spain, though the story adds that Spurs are actively trying to renew his deal.

Should Spurs keep Romero?

Despite the fact that Romero may be looking to move on, the Londoners are in a position of strength given he has two years left on his current contract, and they could still receive a fee for him next summer.

Keeping the Argentine may be key in helping Frank transition to life as boss of Spurs, especially as his aggressive playstyle arguably makes him a strong stylistic fit for how Frank asks his centre-backs to play.

However, the 27-year-old has suffered frequent injury issues, with the defender having started just 18 Premier League games last season, while his partner in the backline Micky van de Ven started just 12 matches.

Relying on the duo to lead the defence in 2025-26 could be risky considering they have not proven they can stay fit, so perhaps bringing in a more reliable centre-back would be sensible.

It should also be noted that Romero has at times been guilty of being overly aggressive, with his tendency to dive into tackles seeing him caught out of position.

If Frank is given assurances about the club bringing in a suitable replacement for the Argentine, then perhaps it would be best for all parties if the centre-back moved on.
