Three Sheffield Wednesday players will have to impress Danny Rohl vs Luton Town.
Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl will be looking to put an end to a fairly poor start to the 2024/25 Championship campaign against recently-relegated Premier League side Luton Town, who haven’t quite got going so far this season.
The Owls have simply not been good enough in several aspects in the side so far, with set-pieces notably being a glaring issue for Rohl’s side so far this season, with their inability to defend the QPR corner in the 96th minute last time out in the league.
Whilst there have been defensive issues, there is also a clear lack of attacking threat from Sheffield Wednesday, as seen from them scoring just one goal in their previous four league games, which was courtesy of a brilliant strike from Barry Bannan.
It is clear that Rohl is not one to linger around and continue to utilise the same players if they are out of form, as seen from Marvin Johnson coming in for Max Lowe, and it could be likely that some players within the Owls squad could follow suit if they don’t perform against Luton Town.
Ike Ugbo
New Sheffield Wednesday arrival Ike Ugbo joined the club with high expectations following a brilliant spell at the club last season on loan, where he significantly contributed to the Owls staying up and avoiding relegation to League One.
However, he has been unable to kickstart his permanent Sheffield Wednesday career and is yet to find the back of the net, and it is clear that he doesn’t quite have the confidence in front of goal.
He is likely to be started yet again against Luton Town, however if he is unable to score, or at the very least make an attacking contribution that he can build on in following games, it could be likely that Rohl looks elsewhere and drops the Canadian striker.
Josh Windass
Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass is another player who hasn’t quite lived up to his heights last season, with a brilliant performance at home to Plymouth Argyle, where he bagged a goal, appearing to be somewhat of an anomaly at this point.
He, like Ugbo, needs to step up against Luton Town, especially considering the depth that Rohl has on offer in the wide areas, with Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama ready to step back into the fray after they were dropped for the game against QPR.
Akin Famewo
Whilst Akin Famewo has not been out of form like the previous two, he will have to impress against Luton Town if he is to be handed yet another opportunity to be part of Rohl’s back three, with Di’Shon Bernard now fully returned to 100% fitness.
Concerns for Rohl undoubtedly sit in the attacking output, but he will also be looking towards his defenders for a serious improvement, lust like he did with bringing in Johnson for Lowe.
