Three Managers Tranmere Rovers Must Target After Nigel Adkins Exit

Tranmere Rovers have parted ways with Nigel Adkins, as announced by their official club website.

Tranmere Rovers lost 1-0 at home to Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night. TRFC are currently sat in 22nd place in the League Two table.

The Whites are only two points above the drop zone with 13 fixtures left to play. Morecambe and Carlisle United occupy the bottom two.

Following Adkins’ exit, the club’s chairman Mark Palios has told their website: “No-one can doubt his commitment, effort or passion for Tranmere Rovers but this season has been hampered by a litany of injuries to, and suspensions of, key players which have all contributed to the current league position.

“I don’t need to tell you that Nigel is a thoroughly decent man whose work ethic, commitment and professionalism through a very difficult period has been clear to see.  He leaves with the Club’s best wishes for the future.”

Here is a look at three candidates they should consider…

Leam Richardson

He has been out of the game since his exit from Rotherham United last year. The 45-year-old could see the Tranmere Rovers job as an ideal opportunity to get back into the dugout.

Richardson, who is from Leeds, has managed Accrington Stanley in the past and spent two years as the number one at Wigan Athletic from 2020 to 2022. He guided the Latics to promotion from League One during his time in the North West.

Dino Maamria

The 51-year-old is available and could do a job with the Whites in the short-term as they look to preserve their Football League status and avoid relegation to the National League. As a player, he made over 300 appearances as a striker before hanging up his boots in 2012.

He has since had managerial spells at Northwich Victoria, Southport, Nuneaton Town, Stevenage, Oldham Athletic and Burton Albion. Maamria was named as the head coach of the latter in 2022 after a stint as their assistant and during his tenure at the Pirelli Stadium they picked up more points then when Nigel Clough was their manager in 2019.

Clint Hill

Hill has been Dave Challinor’s number two at Stockport County over recent years and they have worked wonders at Edgeley Park. The Hatters have risen from the National League to the third tier and they now have their sights set on the Championship.

The Huyton-born man started his career at Tranmere Rovers and played 170 matches. He then went on to play in the Premier League for Stoke City, Crystal Palace and QPR.
