Stockport County To Challenge Again Next Season After Beating QPR And Charlton Athletic To Target

Stockport County broke their club record to sign Malik Mothersille and look to go one step further next season in League One.

Stockport County finished 3rd in the League One table last campaign and narrowly missed out on promotion. The Hatters lost on penalties in the play-off semi-finals to Leyton Orient.

The third-tier outfit will want to challenge again for a place in the Championship and have already made moves in the transfer window. Tayo Edun, Christy Grogan and Joseph Olowu have all joined on free transfers.

Dave Challinor’s side announced their fourth arrival of the summer in July, breaking their club record transfer fee on Peterborough United forward Malik Mothersille. The sum is undisclosed, though it is a seven-figure one, as per reports.

Stockport County did lose star man Tanto Olaofe to Charlton Athletic but have replaced him with the Jamaican international. Mothersille scored 16 goals and had 10 assists in all competitions last campaign.

It looks to be an exceptional bit of business done at Edgeley Park and sets them up well to have another successful season in League One.

The fact Championship sides QPR and Charlton Athletic were rumoured to have eyes on Mothersille is a reflection of the ambition shown by County and the pulling power they have built in recent seasons.

Stockport County will want play-offs at a minimum

Challinor will fancy his side’s chances again next campaign, especially with the arrival of Mothersille. The 21-year-old has been a standout since joining Peterborough United in 2023 and will be eager to showcase his talent at Edgeley Park.

Stockport County were knocked out on penalties in the play-offs last season and will be eager to go one further next season.

The standard of teams in the division now is as high as it has ever been, but if the Hatters continue to invest as they have done so far, they will be in the mix for promotion again come May.

The Hatters could lose more players this summer

Losing their star striker in Olaofe was always a possibility this summer and performing well in League One usually results in interest from the Championship.

Stockport County star Ethan Pye is the next player rumoured to have interest this window, with West Brom linked to the Englishman.

The 22-year-old has risen through the academy and become an instrumental figure in the Hatters’ starting XI. The defender made 44 league appearances last term, scoring once and assisting three times.

In this new player trading era though, such departures and statement signings could become more commonplace in the North West.
