Southampton Battle With Ipswich For £8.4m Midfielder In January Transfer

Southampton and Ipswich Town would both like to sign Glen Kamara from Rennes in the upcoming January transfer window.

Since we are now within that weird period between Christmas and New Year, it has been the perfect time for the Saints to reflect on their year and think about the players they would like to sign in the January transfer window.

Naturally, the strategy for the upcoming window will be a little different. It is the first time Ivan Juric will have an opportunity to change his squad around.

There are many avenues Southampton can take and players simply need to be signed – After all, the Saints are still rock bottom of the Premier League table.

Southampton battle with Ipswich for Glen Kamara in January transfer window

According to a new report from Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, Glen Kamara could leave Rennes in January and he is wanted by both Southampton and Ipswich Town.

Last season, Kamara played in the Championship with Leeds United. He was one of their standout players, hence why he was allowed after they failed to obtain promotion back to the Premier League.

Kamara has also played in the United Kingdom with Rangers. He has European experience, in both the Champions League and the Europa League. Therefore, it’s hard to argue that he isn’t Premier League ready.

The easy solution is to suggest that Southampton need to sign players who have played in the Premier League. This is due to the nature of the challenge ahead of them – Clawing back their way from a rock-bottom position.

For context, no team has ever escaped relegation having less than 10 points on Christmas day. On Christmas day, and still to this day, Southampton have just six points. Therefore, they would be breaking records by clinching safety.

So, the consensus seems to be that Southampton need to sign players at Premier League level. The only confirmed judge of this is players with Premier League experience, which Kamara does not have.

However, my opinion is that he is at the level of the Premier League. If Leeds were promoted last season, we would have seen that.

If Kamara is not quite up to the standard of the Premier League, then at least we know he will excel in the Championship. Let’s face it, this is the much more realistic destiny for Southampton next season.
