Sheffield Wednesday Prepare Late Move For 27-Year-Old Everton Defender

Sheffield Wednesday are preparing a late swoop for Everton defender Mason Holgate after his move to France collapsed, as per Jacque Talbot.

Sheffield Wednesday conducted a lot of transfer business earlier this summer as they looked to build a new-look squad to compete higher in the Championship.

Danny Rohl’s side were an exciting watch last season, and many expected them to really kick on this year.

That hasn’t happened just yet and it seems they are still looking to add before tonight’s deadline.

Holgate was meant to be on the move today with a transfer to Ligue 1 side Lyon on the cards this morning. However, that deal fell through.

That has presented the Owls with an opportunity to swoop for the Englishman and whilst it remains to be seen whether it would be a permanent or loan deal, the interest appears genuine.

Finding his form

Holgate, 27, spent last season across two different loan spells.

He started off in the Championship with Southampton and he made five appearances in the league for the Saints. He then returned to Goodison Park and was sent out again to Sheffield United where he played just ten Premier League games across the back end of last season.

The former England youth international has had a tricky time as of late and he needs a move which will help him find a bit of momentum in his performances.

He has 137 Premier League games under his belt and there is definitely the potential there for him to be a solid second tier option for Sheffield Wednesday.

Looking ahead

Rohl’s side so far this season have won one and lost two in the league. They are yet to pick up a point since their opening fixture.

On Tuesday night they beat Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup 5-1. Despite them being a League Two opponent, they will hope that result can give the side a bit of confidence heading back into league action this weekend.

The Owls don’t look as dynamic as they did last season, but it may be due to the big turnaround in players this summer and if that is the case then they should begin to settle as we get deeper into the season.

Sheffield Wednesday make the trip south to The Den to face Millwall tomorrow. The Lions are winless in their first three league outings and the Owls will be hoping to pick up a win away in the capital.
