Several NBA media insiders are suggesting that the San Antonio Spurs may be interested in trading for Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson.

San Antonio would likely dangle Keldon Johnson and draft compensation in trade talks to further upgrade the roster around Victor Wembanyama this season, said hoops analyst Jake Weinback this weekend.

Just days ago, sportscasters Don Harris and Chuck Miketinac mentioned on their Sneakers and Cleats podcast that San Antonio might not be done with offseason roster moves and that Keldon Johnson was regarded as the most likely player to be traded.

Cam Johnson, a 6’8”, 210 pound standout who can play both the small forward and power forward positions was the eleventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft. He reached the 2021 NBA Finals with Phoenix during his second year in the league and spent four seasons with the Suns before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets in February 2023.

Podcaster NetsPress tweeted that Johnson is a very nice fit in places like Sacramento, Orlando, and Los Angeles (Lakers), but “a dark horse team such as San Antonio, Toronto or Golden State also show some interest.”

We speculated back in June that the Spurs might be interested in speaking to Brooklyn about acquiring one or two players from their current roster since the Nets appear to be looking for draft capital as they move forward with rebuild plans.

If the Spurs’ front office is indeed interested in acquiring Johnson, he would bring a combination of size and skill that makes him a valuable asset on both ends of the court. Johnson is known for his solid defensive abilities, which would complement the Spurs’ focus on building a strong defensive team. Johnson would also bring diverse offensive skills, but in particular, his career average of 39.2% from three-point range would help space the floor for the Spurs. That skill might benefit a player like Victor Wembanyama who can dominate inside the most. Having played in the NBA Finals and numerous playoff games, Johnson would also add valuable experience to a young Spurs team.

Financially speaking, Johnson is under a reasonable contract through the 2026-27 season, giving the Spurs long-term control if they were to acquire him. Last year Johnson signed a 4-year, $94.5 million contract with the Brooklyn Nets, which includes $90 million guaranteed:

2024-25 Salary: $22.5 million

2025-26 Salary: $21.5 million

2026-27 Salary: $23.6 million

There have already been numerous trade rumors surrounding Cam Johnson this offseason, especially after the Brooklyn Nets trade of Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks. Several teams, including the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, and Orlando Magic, have shown interest in acquiring him and Johnson himself has acknowledged the rumors but says he remains focused on his current role with the Nets.
