Salford City Have Put Pressure On Their Playoff Rivals After A Dominant Performance

Salford City have put pressure on their playoff rivals after a dominant performance and 3-1 victory against Morecambe.

The Ammies were able to gain three crucial points to put them in touching distance of the playoff positions with goals from Ossama Ashley, Cole Stockton and, Kelly Nmai all finding the back of the net.

Karl Robinsons’ side now sit two points off the playoff positions, and with two games to go there is still a strong belief that the promotion is a possibility.

The early goal from Ashley set the pace of the game, with Salford hoping to dismantle the home side, Benjamin Woodburn’s cross caused issues for the Shrimps and the ball deflected around the box until it found the feet of Ashley, who neatly slotted it past Harry Burgoyne on his left.

And with the Ammies ambitions firmly set they were able to extended their lead to two just before the end of the half, as Hakeeb Adelakun played an excellent ball over the top for Woodburn, who cut it back to Stockton in the box.

The Salford forward was able to take the ball well before accurately placing his shot into the bottom left corner against his former side.

And with the half time whistle, the Ammies were walking into the changing room with confidence with a two goal lead away from home.

However, that confidence was impacted early into the second half after a long throw from Max Taylor left the Salford backline open and left a perfect opportunity for Songo’o to fire it past Matthew Young and give them a chance to claim an equaliser.

And despite the numerous chances the Ammies through at the away sides goal, there was still a worry from the away fans of potentially dropping valuable points.

However, the goal ended up as a mere consolation as with only five minutes left in normal time the Ammies worries were lifted as Adelakun drilled the ball across the box to find Nmai and close the game out.

With the three points secured Karl Robinson said: “Today it could have been five or six as some of our football was scintillating, but we have got to be more ruthless in the final third when we get in there and take these opportunities.

“I thought the players were sensational and for us to be where we are I am so proud of the players.

“We have to go on and put six more points on our tally and we’ll see where that gets us and if you need a little luck, but you can’t ask for that luck if you don’t put the points on the board and we need to do that.”

And with the league season coming to a close, the playoff battle is heating up for the Ammies who are now one win away from being in heavy contention for a playoff position.

With two games in hand against Colchester and Carlisle, Karl Robinson’s Salford City side will be looking to continue their winning ways – and leap frog eighth placed Colchester United in their next fixture.
