The San Antonio Spurs might not want to trade for Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks, according to Kurt Helin from NBC Sports.
Helin says the Spurs don’t think Young would work well with Victor Wembanyama, but they might like Dejounte Murray from the Hawks. Murray played for San Antonio from 2016 to 2022.
This news comes as the Spurs are being talked about in connection with Chris Paul from the Golden State Warriors. NBA insider Marc Stein said on Saturday that the Spurs might be interested in Paul if he leaves the Warriors this summer.
Stein wrote, “A potential team to watch, should Paul and the Warriors part ways, is San Antonio,” Stein wrote. “Among the early personnel rumbles in circulation: The Spurs could emerge as a Paul suitor if they decide to pursue some veteran know-how on a short-term contract basis to furnish presumptive Rookie of the Year winner Victor Wembanyama with more seasoned help in Year 2.”
Paul could become a free agent if the Warriors don’t keep him by June 28. He could be a good fit for Wembanyama in his second year.
Young might not be a free agent this year, but he could be traded because the Hawks missed the playoffs. Some NBA insiders, like Stein, think the Hawks might trade Young this summer.
Stein wrote, “You could also say that there is a growing belief in many corners of the league that Atlanta’s preference would actually be shopping Young.”
Since Young and Murray joined the Hawks in 2022, they only made the playoffs once and had a 41-41 record this year.
Young averaged 10.8 assists this season and could be a good choice for a team that needs a point guard. Trading him could help Atlanta improve next season or get picks for a rebuild.
