League One Rotherham United are set to secure the signing of 25-year-old midfielder Dru Yearwood on a free transfer after fending off interest from Championship suitors.
Yearwood is a free agent, having left Nashville SC when his contract expired at the beginning of 2025. He had been in the MLS since 2020, initially joining New York Red Bulls from Brentford. He would go on to make 111 appearances in the United States before finding himself without a club.
According to journalist Dan Marsh, Yearwood “had other suitors in L1 (League One) + the Championship” before deciding on a move to the Millers.
Rotherham United Strengthen
Whilst it is debatable whether Yearwood would have been an effective signing in the Championship, after struggling for periods in the MLS it is a clear signal of intent if the club were able to convince him to move against League One or even Championship competition.
He has played in League One before with Southend United and was able to make 25 league appearances in his first season and 27 in his second as a teenager which earned him a move to Brentford.
Unfortunately his time with the Bees did not go to plan and he sound found himself moved on to the MLS.
His last competitive transfer was in 2024, so it may take him some time to regain his fitness and his match sharpness after so long on the sidelines. However, Rotherham have acted early to bring him in which should give him the opportunity to take part in the club’s pre-season.
Big Season for Matt Hamshaw
Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw is heading into the new League One season as a newcomer to full time management. He took over on a caretaker basis after Steve Evans was sacked and the club took a huge risk in appointing him to the position on a permanent basis. He has been a first team coach under former boss Paul Warne, and also joined him at Derby County. After the now MK Dons manager was sacked he took over as caretaker and continued under John Eustace for a while before stepping down and eventually returning to Rotherham.
