Rotherham United, under manager Matt Hamshaw, may be the club to reset and kickstart Manchester United youngster Dan Gore’s career following years of injury woes.
Rotherham United are looking to right the wrongs of last campaign, where the previous promotion favourites eventually found themselves stranded in mid-table mediocrity. Local lad and former RUFC youth coach Matt Hamshaw rejoined the club as first-team manager towards the latter end of the season, helping the club settle in 13th place.
However, perhaps most crucially, Hamshaw was able to keep loanee Dan Gore at the club, despite his injury issues, integrating him into his side for the remaining two fixtures. Paul Davis, of the Rotherham Advertiser, has since spoken of the club’s desire to bring Gore back to the New York Stadium.
The Manchester United loanee was brought to South Yorkshire by former Millers boss Steve Evans as a late winter window signing, immediately prompting excitement and optimism among fans. This enthusiasm was backed up performance-wise only days later, as Gore registered an assist on debut away at Birmingham City.
However, this would be the last time Gore put on a Rotherham United shirt until late April, suffering a metatarsal injury.
Hamshaw’s faith in Gore
Upon Hamshaw’s arrival as the new Millers manager, Gore remained in the treatment room. However, due to the contract in club facilities, the 20-year-old returned to Carrington to undergo his rehab with Manchester United.
To retain a connection with the Red Devils, Hamshaw pledged his faith in the youngster. He offered him an opportunity to feature in the remaining two games of the season, adding minutes to his legs and the ability to showcase his talents at League One level.
Hamshaw has continuously spoken of his desire to integrate youthful players into his Rotherham United side, aiming to lower the average age of his squad. Alongside his comments regarding constant communication with Manchester United, Gore appears to be one of the 43-year-old’s top targets this summer.
Dan Gore’s qualities
The United academy graduate has been with the club since 2021, captaining the club’s U21s and having won the Reserve/U21s Player of the Year award for 2022/23, aged only 18 years old.
Besides his pedigree at youth level for MUFC, Gore also impressed Rotherham United fans in his short cameo on the last game of the 2024/25 season.
He started the game, playing just over an hour, impressing with his ‘tenacity and work ethic’, traits Hamshaw has praised the youngster for possessing.
Should Gore re-join Rotherham United for the season on a loan deal, Matt Hamshaw appears confident he can get the best out of the midfielder, helping to revive his career following the aforementioned injury setbacks.
