Red Sox Urged to Land $34 Million Slugger in Blockbuster Trade

The Boston Red Sox have made some significant roster moves amid their struggles this season.

The team has promoted top-ranked prospects Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony in recent days, but the moves haven’t done much to add to the wins column. Going into Wednesday, the Red Sox sat in fourth place in the American League East division with a 33-36 record and an 18.5% chance at the playoffs, per FanGraphs.

One of the biggest problems for the team has been offensive inconsistency, as well as some questions at first base after a season-ending injury for Triston Casas. In a new prediction for the Milwaukee Brewers’ trade deadline, Tremayne Person of FanSided has potentially solved both of those problems for the Red Sox.

“The Boston Red Sox are scrambling for stability at first base — and so far, the answers haven’t come from within,” Person wrote. “That’s where Brewers slugger Rhys Hoskins comes in, who, in the midst of a bounce-back season, checks nearly every box for the Red Sox. He’s a proven right-handed bat with postseason experience, and his contract structure makes him an intriguing deadline target.”

After six productive years with the Philadelphia Phillies, Hoskins missed the 2023 season with an injury and then joined the Brewers on a two-year, $34 million deal before last season. He had a decent debut with the Brewers, but has been much better this season and is slashing .256/.348/.427 with nine homers so far.

Hoskins has an $18 million mutual option on his deal for next year, so acquiring him would be a low-risk investment for a Red Sox team that seems to be in need of some roster stabilization. Hoskins could also offer some clubhouse leadership for Boston’s collection of budding rookie stars.

Ultimately, this is one trade prediction that could go a long way in boosting the Red Sox season before it gets totally out of hand.
