The Perth Bears Rugby League Club is pleased to announce the appointment of David Sharpe APM OAM as its inaugural General Manager of Football.
With nearly four decades of distinguished experience across law enforcement and sports integrity, Sharpe is recognised globally as an authority in both fields
His career with the Australian Federal Police saw him rise to the rank of Assistant Commissioner, where he led initiatives like the Mental Health Strategy Framework.
His deep-rooted passion for rugby league, reflected in his past as a player and coach with the Canberra Raiders and recent role as a culture and welfare officer with the Australian national rugby league team, complements his extensive leadership roles in sport.
As CEO of Sport Integrity Australia and previously ASADA (Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority), David pioneered a new National Integrity Framework that set a global standard for safeguarding integrity across sports.
His efforts have extended beyond Australia, where he has been instrumental in promoting athlete rights, developing award-winning educational programs, and advocating for gender equality within sports leadership positions.
His accolades include the Order of Australia Medal and the Australian Police Medal.
Recently, it was under Sharpe’s watch that the SIA conducted a review that found gymnasts were abused at the WA Institute of Sport – praising the “courage” of those victims who came forward with evidence.
Perth Bears chief executive officer Anthony De Ceglie said Sharpe was a visionary and transformative leader who would help ensure the club’s foundations were built on the highest of values from the very start.
“David’s background is unique in Australian sport and we’re thrilled his expertise across sports integrity, cultural leadership and rugby league will be part of our DNA from day one,” he said.
Head Coach Mal Meninga said it is a wonderful appointment for the Perth Bears and the West Australian rugby league community.
“I am excited to work alongside David and continue our long association within the sporting sector,” he said.
“I know David is looking forward to this challenge, but I also know his values, integrity and experience will help us establish a best-in-class organisation.”
Sharpe said he can’t wait to make Western Australia his home and repay the game that has meant so much to him during his life.
“Perth will be a club that players and fans feel privileged to wear the logo of,” he said.
“I’m honoured to be part of what Anthony and Mal are building because the Perth Bears will put fans and community at the heart of every decision – and that means integrity is a priority.
“The game of rugby league has given me and my family so much and now it’s time to give back.”
