Notts County Announce The Loan Signing Of 26-Year-Old Wing Back

Notts County have announced the loan signing of Barry Cotter from Barnsley.

The defender, who joined The Tykes following 35 games back in the League of Ireland Premier Division, split between Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic, originally came through the Limerick FC Academy and signed for Ipswich Town- featuring twice in their 2017/18 Championship campaign.

Primarily a full back or wing back, the 26 year old from Ennis had made 72 appearances at Oakwell since arriving for their 2022/23 League One season and picked up the Premier Division twice at Shamrock Rovers- scoring once, against UCD in May 2022.

Capped at Under 19 level, he now links up with former Dundalk loanee Lewis Macari and ex Shelbourne winger Will Jarvis while Republic of Ireland underage international Conor Grant is also amongst the squad.

However, it’s the familiarity with the manager Martin Paterson which was a factor in the move, a point made to club media when Cotter spoke to them,

“I came to Barnsley halfway through the gaffer’s stint as assistant to Michael Duff and I  clicked with him straightaway.

“I love the way he works, the standards he sets and the demands he puts on his players.

“He’s very honest and ambitious – and brings a lot of energy to his training sessions.

“He wants to play football that gets fans off their feet and hopefully I can help make that happen.

“I’m not short of pace – I’m direct and love getting forward from wide positions, while never shying away from a tackle.

“I feel like I’ve had most of my joy on the right hand side but I can definitely be a threat on the left as well.

“I’m an honest, hard-working lad and I just want to do my best for the club.”
