Kodai Senga takes another step toward Mets return in his third rehab start – Hartford Courant

Kodai Senga is scheduled to pitch against the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday and then may face the Atlanta Braves next weekend.

The Japanese right-hander is slated to throw 80-85 pitches for Triple-A Syracuse in a rehab start, after which Mets officials will gauge whether he’s ready for his 2024 major league debut.

Senga has been pitching every sixth day, which would align him for Friday night at Citi Field against the Braves.

“Everything is moving in the right direction,” manager Carlos Mendoza said before the Mets opened a four-game series against the Marlins. “Let’s get through [Saturday] and the next couple of days and hopefully we have a decision here to make.”

Senga began the season on the injured list after he was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain early in spring training.

Senga was set back in May by triceps discomfort before restarting his rehab in June.

Sean Reid-Foley, who is rehabbing from a right shoulder impingement, threw multiple bullpen sessions in Port St. Lucie during the All-Star break and is expected to begin facing hitters in live batting practice on Monday.

The right-hander was placed on the injured list on June 21, weakening an already thin bullpen.

Starling Marte has begun working out with the team — his first baseball activity since he was placed on the injured list on June 25 with a bone bruise in his right knee.

Marte played catch and hit off a tee.

There still isn’t a timetable for his return, but Mendoza had previously indicated the veteran outfielder wouldn’t be a player for the team in July.

The Mets have been using a combination of Jeff McNeil, Tyrone Taylor and DJ Stewart in right field with Marte sidelined.

Jose Quintana reported a high fever to the trainers and has been moved from his scheduled start on Sunday.

Christian Scott and David Peterson will each move up a day and pitch in the final two games of the Marlins series.

Peterson was originally slated to pitch in the Subway Series on Tuesday, but Mendoza is hopeful Quintana will be ready to take that spot in the rotation.

Mendoza said Quintana has been told to stay away from the team until he is feeling better.
