SAINTS manager Ivan Juric hopes the club does not cash in on Kyle Walker-Peters and played down the suggestion despite his contract expiring.
Walker-Peters, 27, has made 185 appearances for Saints but his deal expires in June with no prospects of signing a new deal currently on the horizon.
It means the former Tottenham Hotspur defender, who helped fire Saints to promotion last season, could walk out of the club for free.
Media reports have linked the likes of West Ham United and Leicester City with historical and contemporary interest but no move ever materialised.
However, asked if he thinks the club would take January as an opportunity to make some money back, Juric told the Daily Echo: “No, I said my opinion about Kyle.
“I think Kyle is a really good player and he’s playing really well. I think for the club it’s really important, in my opinion, that he stays here.”
Juric had spoken previously about a management meeting scheduled for Tuesday this week, involving the new boss and the club’s transfer hierarchy.
He did not issue a concrete update on any new moves in the press conference but revealed he offered his feedback to his bosses after assessing the squad.
Juric has used his first few weeks to determine which positions he believes Saints do not need new additions and where they could offload a current player.
“I said what I think about the team to the club and now they will make their moves to see what they can do,” Juric explained.
