Coventry City have seen their Viktor Gyokeres sell-on clause drop from 15% to 10% after being paid €4m in bonuses, as per Ben Jacobs.
Coventry City have been all change so far this season, spending big in the summer window and then making the huge call to sack long-serving manager Mark Robins.
The Sky Blues spent a good amount in the summer with Jack Rudoni, Norman Bassette and Luis Binks all proving to be decent additions. And, after their big spending, they could be set for a welcome boost to their transfer budget.
Writing on X, reporter Ben Jacobs has revealed that Coventry City have a 10% sell-on clause for former star Viktor Gyokeres. The fee was originally 15% however Sporting have paid the Sky Blues €4m in bonuses, reducing the sell-on by 5%.
There is every chance said sell-on is activated this January with Gyokeres linked with clubs all over Europe. The Swede has scored 16 goals in 11 league games this campaign along with five in five in the Champions League.
Gyokeres is heavily linked with a move to Manchester United after Ruben Amorim joined the Red Devils.
How much could Coventry City receive?
When Gyokeres eventually does depart, be it in January or the summer, it will be a big fee. While Brighton will be due some of the funds, Coventry City will still receive a multi-million fee.
Reports of the recent Manchester United interest in the Swede have claimed that he is valued at £65m, though previous reports have said that a release clause of up to €100m, which equates to a little over £83m.
A fee of that size with the Sky Blues’ 10% clause in mind could see as much as £8.3m go their way, although a sum of that will have to be paid to Brighton.
Regardless, that money would make for a welcome boost to the club’s transfer kitty.
What next for Coventry?
Frank Lampard was appointed head coach and his first game is against struggling Cardiff City. It is Lampard’s first job since his spell as caretaker boss at Chelsea in 2023, so a game against a relegation candidate should be a nice return to action for the Chelsea legend.
Lampard has not managed in the Championship since his stint at Derby County in the 2018/19 season. During that spell, he took the Rams to the play-off final before losing to Aston Villa.
The new boss will need to get wins on the board early to win over the Coventry City faithful who were appalled at the decision to sack the legendary Mark Robins.
