Frank Lampard Talks On Coventry City’s Problems After Cardiff Draw

Frank Lampard warned there is no ‘quick fix’ to address all of Coventry City’s problems following a New Year’s Day draw at Cardiff City.

The Sky Blues had to settle for a point at the Cardiff City Stadium after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto cancelled out Alex Robertson’s early strike while Bluebirds striker Callum Robinson saw red moments after City drew level.

And Lampard feels his side could have done more in the second half to take advantage of the extra man despite City extending their unbeaten run to three matches.

Lampard said: “When you come in, we’ve had three wins and now we’ve had two draws in a row so it’s not going to be a quick fix, you’re going to have games where you have to improve and that’s what I’m brought here for with my role to try and help with that.

“We know there’s some quality and potential in the squad but there are a lot of things it takes to win football matches regularly in this league and the first half performance we gave you will lose pretty much very time if you perform like that.

“It’s never easy in this league, but with the circumstances in the game you want to win it.

“That can happen against ten men, they can protect their goal, and we made changes to be more aggressive and more attacking and there’s only so much you can do to get attacking players on the pitch.

“Then we make opportunities and crosses, and we probably did enough to score, we could have done more but it’s not always that easy, but we could have done more.”

The Sky Blues made the worst possible start as Robertson headed Cardiff into the lead from close range after just six minutes.

However, City equalised one minute after the break as Sakamoto finished from close range after Ellis Simms’ initial effort ricocheted into the midfielder’s path.

And Cardiff striker Robinson then received a straight red card for an elbow on Coventry defender Bobby Thomas just one minute later.

Lampard recalled striker Simms to the starting line-up for the first time since the start of December.

And Lampard praised the forward’s impact after he played a crucial role in City’s leveller.

Lampard added: “That’s what you want from Ellis, he can be a handful and he has to be a handful with everything that he has got and his attributes.

“He helps us with the goal and with different situations and he has to use his pace and his strength, and we know he can score goals when he gets going, but as with everyone he can do more, and we can improve.”

Coventry are next in action against Norwich City on Saturday, January 4 with kick-off at 3pm at Carrow Road.
