Frank Lampard has given an indication of when Haji Wright is due back from injury and given the Coventry City striker a huge vote of confidence ahead of what he hopes will be a “big year” for the player.

The Sky Blues boss has explained the timescale of Haji Wright’s rehabilitation from an Achilles issue that will mean he won’t be available until the start of the new 2025/26 season, but outlined his plans to work closely with the USA international to ensure he sees the “best of him” next term.

Wright missed the first three months of Lampard’s tenure due to a serious ankle injury he suffered just weeks before he was appointed as Mark Robins’ replacement, and although he burst back onto the goal scoring scene with a memorable hat-trick against Sunderland after a phased return from the bench in March, the 27-year-old struggled to get back to top form for the remainder of the campaign when he scored just two more goals for City.

But a total of 12 goals for the season in which he featured in only 31 domestic matches, coming on top of 19 in his opening season at the CBS Arena means he’s still very much City’s main goal scorer.

Providing the very latest on the player’s injury, Lampard said: “Haji sustained an injury when he was away with the USA team. I think we’re two-and-a-bit weeks into what would you call his rehab from the moment he got the injury, which is an Achilles injury.

“Hopefully it’s nothing major. He has done everything right and he has been off his feet for a few weeks. He was really keen to come here to Portugal with us, which I was really pleased with and it’s the right thing to have him around the group. We can do all the work with him here and Haji is a big player for us and I was very keen for him to be here with us.”

Speaking to the club’s media team, the head coach added: “He’s good with the work, he gets on it with it and even for me, this is my first full season with the players and I really want to get to work with the players and Haji individually, as he works through his rehab, we want to get him fit for the start of the season hopefully and I think it can be a big year for him.

“He has so much talent and I want to work with him closely and I want to see the best of him.”
