Derby County Among Trios Interested In Shock Transfer Raid For 35-Year-Old Sheffield Wednesday Midfield hero

Derby County are reportedly among the list of clubs chasing a shock move for Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan.

Stoke City and Coventry have also been touted as potential destinations for the Scot who has been offered a new deal by the Owls.

But with Wednesday having just been hit with a three-window transfer fee restriction for late payment of wages, it is claimed Bannan is now considering his options.

Wrexham have been strongly linked with Bannan, but Sportsboom claim that more Championship sides have joined the queue.

Bannan has played for Derby before having enjoyed a spell at Pride Park on loan from Aston Villa earlier in his career.

And he showed a timely reminder of his qualities in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory at Pride Park last season when he scored with a fine long-range strike.

Bannan was subjected to jeers in that game from some Derby fans and said after the game he could not understand why.

“I had a bee in my bonnet at half-time,” Bannan told BBC Sheffield post-match. “The Derby fans were battering me in the first half and got me booked, so I had a personal vendetta in the second half to come out and do something special and luckily the chance broke to me at the edge of the box and I capitalised.

“I enjoyed my spell here when I was younger, so it was a bit weird that they were booing me and hammering me to be honest – hence why the celebration was so dramatic. When fans give you it you have got to give a bit back, so I was happy to go and celebrate with my fans in the crowd.

“I do (get stick) but not here. I played for them. I enjoyed my time here and so it was a bit weird that I got booed. I thought I did alright here. There are not many stadiums that I go to and get a good reception but I thought I’d be alright here today. I’ve got the last laugh.”

Bannan is approaching the twilight years of his career but he was a key figure under Danny Rohl last season having played 45 games and scored four goals and registered four assists.
