Danny Rohl has returned to Sheffield Wednesday after missing the first two weeks of their pre-season schedule. The German, who was linked with the vacant Middlesbrough role before the appointment of Rob Edwards, was expected to leave Hillsborough this summer.
Off-the-field issues with owner Dejphon Chansiri meant that Rohl had decided not to return for pre-season, with the South Yorkshire club in chaos.
The Owls remain under a transfer embargo, while several players have indicated their intentions to terminante their contracts following issues of wages payments.. FIFA rules state any players who have not received their wages on the correct date for two consecutive months can terminate their contract by giving written notice.
As well as Boro, Rohl had been linke with moves to Southampton and Leicester City, with a return to his native Germany also said to be on the cards.
Assistant manager Henrik Pederson had agreed to stay on and was expected to replace Rohl once a decision on his future was made, but the fact he has returned to training today further complicates matters.
Middlesbrough are schedule to go to Hillsborough on Wednesday, October 22, before hosting the Owls at the Riverside on April 21, 2026.

Baggies’ next move
West Bromwich Albion are closing in on their third signing under new manager Ryan Mason, with a deal for Montreal defender George Campbell said to be imminent.
The Baggies have already brought Nat Phillips and Aune Heggebo to the Hawthorns and are now looking to land USA international Campbell for around £1m. Bristol City had been linked with a move for the MLS star, but West Brom are now said to set to seal a deal.
Blackburn blow
Blackburn Rovers boss Valerien Ismael has confirmed that Tyrhys Dolan will not be returning to the club this summer. The winger left Ewood Park when his contract expired last month but is yet to sign a deal elsewhere.
That prompted fans to speculate that he could be about to return Rovers, but manager Ismael told the Lancashire Telegraph: “He’s make it clear. At least his agent, make it clear that he’s going somewhere else. But at the moment, I don’t think that he’s going anywhere.”
Norwich want Celtic star
Norwich City have expressed an interest in Celtic winger Yang Hyun-Jun, according to Sky Sports. Reports in Glasgow suggest the 23-year-old is keen to move to the Canaries, having struggled to establish himself in Glasgow.
The South Korean joined the Hoops from Gangwon in 2023 and has scored seven goals in 65 appearances for the Scottish champions, but looks set to move on this summer.
