In-form John Sutton closes in on 300th game, new deal | NRL.com

When John Sutton ran out for his 212th match in 2014, he moved past Bob McCarthy and became the most capped player in the history of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. It was a moment that reflected far more than numbers. It marked the rise of a local junior who grew into one of the Club’s most important leaders.

Sutton reached the milestone during a 26-6 win over the Dragons at the Sydney Cricket Ground, surrounded by the colours he had worn since childhood. From that point on, he continued to elevate his legacy, eventually finishing with an extraordinary 336 appearances for the Club.

A one-Club man through every challenge and triumph, Sutton spent 15 seasons setting the standard for consistency, toughness and pride in the jersey. He guided South Sydney through rebuilding years, played a crucial role in lifting the 2014 premiership trophy and became a figure every young Rabbitoh looked up to.

His record now stands as a testament to loyalty and endurance in the modern era, and it remains one of the most significant achievements in the Club’s long history.

Current top five most capped Rabbitohs players:

  • John Sutton – 336
  • Thomas Burgess – 249
  • Alex Johnston – 243
  • Adam Reynolds – 231
  • Nathan Merritt – 218

A local kid who became a captain, a champion and the most capped Rabbitoh of all time. John Sutton’s name will always be woven into the fabric of our Club.
