Coventry City Owner Makes Frank Lampard Contract Length Point Claim Amid Club Stability

Doug King insists nothing should be read into the length of Frank Lampard’s contract at Coventry City.

The club owner stated his wish earlier this month during his live broadcast fans’ forum to explain the sacking of long-standing manager Mark Robins that he would like to continue that stability with another long-term appointment. Robins and Adi Viveash, you may recall, were given four year deals when King first took over the club.

Asked by CoventryLive then, why the Sky Blues new head coach has only been given a two and a half year contract, King quipped: “Well, most managers don’t last that long do they!

“Two and a half years is a good stint, right? I mean, obviously contracts can be extended at any point can’t they? You start it off and it’s a logical period to come in half a season in and then have a full pre-season to get your teeth into it.”

He added: “I wouldn’t read anything into that at all. I negotiated the deal and that’s what we did.”

As for Lampard’s remit in light of the fact that Robins was told he needed to get to the play-offs three out of five seasons, King said: “I mean, we came out two years ago when we bought the club and that was our aim to try to hit the play-offs three out of the five years. We obviously hit the one in the first year, narrowly missed it last year… But look, it isn’t a day for what can be achieved, it’s a day for a new…

“We haven’t had a new head coach here for eight years nearly, right, it’s a big day. There was a lot of excitement at the training ground and just because when you have change after that long it is really quite novel, actually. I felt the energy and I think that was pretty much what I was hoping to see. It was a cold day but you felt the energy and there’s a lot to do.

“We’ve got a long contract and I trust in Frank and his coaching team. Whatever happens, we get on with it and we do it properly and do the best we can.”
