Sheffield United have reported agreed a verbal deal to sign Ben Brereton Diaz on loan from Southampton until the end of the season.
Southampton signed Ben Brereton Diaz from Villarreal in 2024. However, with half a year now under his belt at St Marys Stadium, it is safe to say that it hasn’t worked out for the Stoke-born Chilean international.
Ben Brereton Diaz was signed by Southampton after a fruitful return in the 2023/24 season with Sheffield United. When the Blades were relegated, the Saints saw it as an opportunity to keep the attacker within the Premier League.
However, after a full circle of events, BBD could see himself returning to Bramall Lane soon.
Sheffield United agree deal to sign Southampton flop on loan
According to a transfer update from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Sheffield United have verbally agreed a loan deal with Southampton, which would see Ben Brereton Diaz re-join the Blades on loan.
In the summer, Sheffield United would then have the option to make the deal permanent. Unsurprisingly, it is a deal which has been driven by Chris Wilder.
In his own words, Crook said: “SUFC have verbally agreed a loan deal with Saints FC for striker Ben Brereton Diaz. It is believed the deal has an option to make the move permanent in the summer. Move driven by Chris Wilder.”
Well, the deal certainly makes sense. Brereton Diaz was hardly given a chance under Russell Martin and even under the new management of Ivan Juric, it has remained the case.
At the weekend, Ben was on the subs bench. However, he did not enter the field of play, despite Southampton losing 0-5 at home and struggling to put together any attacking fluidity.
We can already envision Ben Brereton Diaz being signed permanently in the summer transfer window. After all, the Blades are likely to be promoted back to the Premier League, with the Saints going the other way. Therefore, Ben is one of those who got away.
