Derby County have bolstered their squad with the signing of free agent full-back Erik Pieters.

The former West Brom and Stoke City player has penned a short-term contract running until the end of the 2024/25 season after training with the Rams squad over the past couple of weeks.

A Rams statement said: “Pieters has been training with the squad over the last couple of weeks and signed as a free agent on Thursday afternoon.”

He becomes head coach John Eustace’s second signing for the club after the arrival of another free agent in Kemar Roofe.

The 36-year-old has made more than 550 club career appearances, including 304 in English football for Stoke City, Burnley and West Brom. He has been a free agent since the conclusion of a short-term deal with Luton Town earlier this term.

Pieters, who also won 14 senior caps for the Netherlands between 2010 and 2014, said of the move: “It’s a really great group. Good fun and really determined in what they do. I’m looking forward to being part of that and helping them stay in the league.”

Derby will resume their bid for survival with a Tuesday night game against Preston North End at Pride Park (7.45pm kick-off).

They are on a run of three successive wins after previously going without a victory since their Boxing Day success over West Brom. They are currently third from bottom of the table, just one point from safety.
