Blockbuster White Sox-Red Sox Trade Could Be Key To Boston’s Offseason

The Boston Red Sox need to have a productive offseason or they’re going to continue to sit below the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees in the American League East.

Heading into the winter, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden has a clear path for the Red Sox to take.

“The Red Sox want to improve their rotation and bullpen this winter and I expect them to land at least one impact starter in free agency,” Bowden wrote. “They’d also like to add a right-handed hitter to their lineup and are flexible on the position.”

Bowden doesn’t bring up any specific names but there are two players the Red Sox could acquire without even reaching into free agency: Chicago White Sox superstar outfielder Luis Robert Jr. and ace Garrett Crochet.

Boston has two big needs: right-handed hitters and starting pitching. Attacking two holes in one trade would be risky, but it’s a risk that Boston should explore.

Both Crochet and Robert are expected to be available in trades this winter, but the price to acquire both would be incredibly steep. Boston has a plethora of talent in the farm system that it could deal from.

Holding onto prospects like Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Roman Anthony, and Marcelo Mayer has been at the top of Boston’s priorities, but with Robert and Crochet available, the Red Sox could find themselves making a difficult decision.

Acquiring both White Sox stars in a trade would be the key to the Red Sox’s offseason without even dipping their toes in the free agency water. They would still have the money to bring in another couple of talented stars.
