Birmingham City Paid Huge Compliment By Rotherham United Boss Steve Evans

Birmingham City have been branded the ‘Galacticos’ of League One.

Rotherham United head coach Steve Evans is intimidated by the amount of money spent by Birmingham City in the summer transfer window.

Admiring the strength of their squad, the 61 year old described them as the ‘Galacticos’ of League One, in reference to Real Madrid’s spending habits in the 2000s.

Additionally, Evans thinks Birmingham could amass 100 points over the course of 46 league games. Only Fulham, Wigan Athletic, Charlton Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield United and Plymouth Argyle have achieved this monumental feat in the past since a win netted you three points – the record is still held by Wolves, who won a total of 103 points during the 2013/14 season.

Indeed, the Blues’ summer spending spree was the biggest that League One had ever seen. Over the course of the transfer window, City bought players such as Jay Stansfield, Christoph Klarer and Willum Thor Willumsson, all for multi-million pound fees.

Speaking in an interview with the Yorkshire Post, Evans said: “I mean it when I say Birmingham City are the Galacticos of League One. They spent £20 million in the [summer] transfer window and they’re paying huge wages. There’s been huge investment. I applaud that.

“For their manager, Chris Davies, three Christmases have come at once. They’re a huge club. Their side is the first one I’ve ever seen in League One where I’ve watched them and thought: ‘This could be 100 points this season.’ But we don’t want any to come from the Millers.”

Birmingham City will take on Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Saturday. Currently, the Blues are second in the league table with 13 points, while the Millers are 17th with six points after a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season.
