ANGEL REESE’S FINALS NIGHTMARE HAS WNBA FANS TALKING — BUT GOLDEN STATE JUST DELIVERED A BIG LESSON TO CAITLIN CLARK’S FEVER

The 2026 WNBA Finals ended with a historic championship celebration in San Francisco, but the disappointment on the other side of the court could have lasting consequences for the Atlanta Dream.

The Golden State Valkyries defeated Atlanta 68-63 in Game 7 on Saturday night, capturing their first WNBA championship in only their second season as an expansion franchise. It was an extraordinary accomplishment for a team that had already established itself as one of the league’s most exciting new organizations.

However, while Golden State celebrated, Atlanta was left wondering how a championship opportunity slipped away.

And one player who will inevitably face questions following the defeat is Angel Reese.

The Atlanta forward finished Game 7 with eight points and 12 rebounds, shooting 3-of-7 from the field. Her rebounding contribution was important, but her offensive production was limited when the Dream needed another reliable scoring option.

For a player who has attracted enormous attention throughout her professional career, the championship-deciding game represented another opportunity to demonstrate her ability on the biggest stage.

Unfortunately for Atlanta, it wasn’t the offensive performance the team needed.

But blaming Reese alone would overlook the much bigger story behind Golden State’s remarkable comeback.

ANGEL REESE COULDN’T FIND HER OFFENSIVE RHYTHM WHEN IT MATTERED MOST

There is no question that Reese’s Game 7 performance will generate plenty of discussion.

Atlanta entered the championship series believing it had the personnel to compete with Golden State. After taking a 2-1 series advantage, the Dream appeared to have placed themselves in an excellent position to capture the franchise’s first championship.

But the Valkyries responded, and their defensive approach became increasingly difficult for Atlanta to overcome.

Reese finished with eight points and 12 rebounds. Although her work on the boards remained valuable, Golden State successfully limited her offensive opportunities around the basket.

The Valkyries understood that allowing Reese to establish an offensive rhythm could create additional problems.

Their defensive rotations and physical presence made Atlanta work for nearly every possession.

Still, Reese deserves credit for helping the Dream reach the Finals in the first place. She also finished the season as the WNBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, demonstrating that her contributions extend beyond scoring.

However, championship expectations come with increased scrutiny.

Reese will need to continue developing her offensive game if she wants to become an even more complete championship-level player.

GABBY WILLIAMS JUST PRODUCED THE PERFORMANCE OF HER CAREER

While Reese struggled offensively, Gabby Williams delivered the kind of performance that championship legends are remembered for.

The Golden State star finished with 30 points, four blocks and two steals, completely changing the direction of the championship-deciding contest.

Even more impressive, Williams scored 28 points in the second half.

Golden State entered halftime trailing 30-24, and the Valkyries needed someone capable of taking responsibility offensively.

Williams answered that challenge.

She repeatedly attacked Atlanta’s defense, created scoring opportunities and delivered when the game became increasingly tense.

Her biggest moment arrived late in the fourth quarter when she connected on a crucial three-pointer to give Golden State a 60-57 advantage.

She subsequently converted important free throws as the Valkyries protected their lead.

Williams was named Finals MVP after averaging 19.6 points and 2.6 steals throughout the championship series.

It was a remarkable ending to a season that transformed Golden State into a championship organization.

GOLDEN STATE’S DEFENSE EXPOSED ATLANTA’S BIGGEST WEAKNESS

Although Williams deserves much of the recognition, Golden State’s championship was built on more than one outstanding individual performance.

The Valkyries demonstrated exactly why defensive consistency matters during a championship run.

Atlanta finished Game 7 shooting just 33.3% from the field and made only six of its 30 three-point attempts.

Those numbers were particularly damaging considering the importance of having multiple offensive threats in a winner-take-all contest.

Jordin Canada finished with 18 points, while Allisha Gray added 16.

They were Atlanta’s only players to reach double figures.

That placed enormous pressure on the Dream’s primary offensive options.

Golden State, meanwhile, received important contributions from several players.

Kiah Stokes recorded 13 rebounds and two blocks, Tiffany Hayes contributed 11 points, and Veronica Burton made crucial plays during the closing moments.

The difference was collective execution.

Golden State didn’t need every player to become a superstar. It needed everyone to understand their responsibilities.

That approach ultimately delivered a championship.

NATALIE NAKASE DESERVES ENORMOUS CREDIT FOR GOLDEN STATE’S HISTORIC RUN

Another major winner from Saturday night’s championship is head coach Natalie Nakase.

After Golden State fell behind 2-1 in the series, Nakase and her coaching staff made important adjustments.

One significant decision involved changing the starting lineup.

The Valkyries inserted Kaila Charles and Tiffany Hayes while moving Kayla Thornton and Cecilia Zandalasini to the bench.

Those adjustments helped Golden State find a different rhythm during the remaining games.

Nakase also demonstrated patience when her team trailed at halftime in Game 7.

Rather than abandoning the team’s identity, she trusted her players to execute the defensive approach that had carried them throughout the season.

That confidence paid off.

Winning a championship in a franchise’s second season is an extraordinary achievement.

Nakase deserves considerable recognition for helping establish a winning culture so quickly.

WHAT THIS CHAMPIONSHIP MEANS FOR CAITLIN CLARK AND THE INDIANA FEVER

While Indiana wasn’t involved in the championship series, Golden State’s victory provides an important lesson for the Fever as they consider their future.

The biggest takeaway is that having recognizable stars doesn’t automatically guarantee a championship.

Teams need complementary players, defensive discipline, reliable shooting and enough offensive options to survive when their biggest stars encounter difficult matchups.

That is particularly relevant to Indiana.

Caitlin Clark remains the centerpiece of the Fever’s long-term ambitions. Her playmaking ability can transform the offense, but Indiana must continue finding players who can maximize what she brings to the court.

The Golden State championship roster provides an interesting example.

Williams delivered the offensive explosion, but Stokes controlled the boards, Hayes supplied valuable scoring and Burton made important contributions during the closing minutes.

Every player had a responsibility.

For Indiana, that means continuing to prioritize the right supporting pieces around Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston.

The Fever cannot simply collect talented names and expect everything to work.

They need players who can defend, make open shots, protect the paint and contribute when Clark attracts additional defensive attention.

Golden State’s championship is another reminder that roster construction matters just as much as individual talent.

ANGEL REESE’S GAME 7 PERFORMANCE WILL CREATE ANOTHER CAITLIN CLARK DEBATE

There is also an interesting subplot involving the attention surrounding Reese and Clark.

Both players entered the WNBA with enormous expectations and have become two of the league’s most recognizable personalities.

Their careers are frequently discussed together, sometimes regardless of whether the comparison is necessary.

Reese’s eight-point performance in Game 7 will inevitably become another talking point in those conversations.

However, one championship game should not determine how an entire career is evaluated.

Reese helped Atlanta reach the Finals, earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and established herself as an important part of the Dream’s future.

Clark, meanwhile, has her own challenges as Indiana attempts to build a championship-caliber roster.

The more interesting discussion isn’t about which player had the better night.

It’s about what each organization needs to do next.

Atlanta must improve its offensive consistency, while Indiana must continue building a roster capable of competing with the league’s strongest defensive teams.

Both situations demonstrate how difficult winning a WNBA championship has become.

THE VALKYRIES HAVE CHANGED THE EXPANSION TEAM CONVERSATION

Golden State’s achievement deserves recognition beyond the immediate excitement of winning a championship.

Expansion franchises traditionally need time to establish themselves, develop chemistry and assemble competitive rosters.

The Valkyries have accomplished something extraordinary by winning the championship in only their second season.

Their victory also sends a message to the rest of the league.

A new franchise doesn’t necessarily need years of rebuilding before becoming a serious championship contender.

Strong leadership, smart personnel decisions, coaching adjustments and a clearly established identity can accelerate that process.

Golden State now has something every franchise wants: a championship trophy.

And with Williams earning Finals MVP honors, the Valkyries have established themselves as a team other contenders will have to take seriously.

FINAL VERDICT: ATLANTA HAS QUESTIONS TO ANSWER, BUT INDIANA HAS A LESSON TO LEARN

The 2026 WNBA Finals delivered a historic conclusion.

Golden State defeated Atlanta 68-63 in the first winner-take-all Game 7 in WNBA Finals history, becoming the first expansion franchise to capture the championship in just its second season.

For the Valkyries, it was a night of celebration.

For the Dream, it was a painful reminder of how quickly championship opportunities can disappear.

Angel Reese will face questions about her offensive performance, particularly after scoring just eight points in the biggest game of the season.

But Atlanta’s defeat was a collective offensive failure against an exceptionally disciplined opponent.

Meanwhile, Indiana should pay close attention to what Golden State accomplished.

The Fever have their own collection of talented players, led by Clark, Mitchell and Boston. The challenge now is putting the right pieces together and creating the kind of team that can consistently compete for championships.

Golden State has shown what is possible.
