Coventry City are set to sign winger Rabbi Matondo from Rangers on an initial loan deal, as per Coventry Live.
Coventry City are looking to enjoy a more fruitful 2025 under the management of Frank Lampard.
The former Everton and Chelsea boss is tasked with leading the Sky Blues back towards the play-off fight after a poor start to the year under Mark Robins. A 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday puts them 13th in the Championship table, a marked improvement on the opening months of the season.
Signings are needed to help Lampard really make his mark on proceedings though, and it seems a first addition is on the cards.
According to Coventry Live, Coventry City are closing in on the initial loan signing of Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.
The versatile attacker is down the pecking order at Ibrox with injury also limiting his action but he now looks set for a new challenge in Sky Blue. The report says the deal could be a loan-to-buy agreement, with the option to make the move permanent for £2m in the summer.
Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland were linked with a move for Matondo earlier this month, but nothing came of the rumours and he now looks set for a move to the West Midlands.
Looking to find form
Matondo has shown sparks of what he can offer in the senior game and the Coventry City-bound man will be eager to get back to his best.
Two goals and three assists in eight games for Rangers this season isn’t a bad return, but consistency has been hard to come by and injuries have been disruptive.
The best spell of Matondo’s career came in Belgium with Cercle Brugge, scoring 10 goals and providing two assists in 27 games during the 2021/22 season. He has also spent time with FC Schalke and Stoke City (loan).
Matondo is a direct and rapid winger who can be a real handful at his best, the challenge will just be to bring that out of him regularly.
Lampard’s winger options
Matondo can play across the front three and in attacking midfield, but his primary position is out on the left-hand side of the frontline.
Coventry City could do with another option there. Ephron Mason-Clark has caught the eye but is currently sidelined while Haji Wright is still being eased back in. Raphael Borges Rodrigues is fit, but he’s very much one for the future.
As such, Matondo may well find some good minutes on the left early on in his time with the Sky Blues. His versatility means that when players return, he’ll have a chance of keeping his place in the starting XI in another position too.
