Liam Delap transfer: Chelsea sign Ipswich Town striker in £30m deal - BBC Sport

Everton are expected to go after a striker this summer, but a move for Liam Delap seems to be 50-50 at the moment.

The Toffees would like to become one of the challenger clubs to the top sides in the Premier League.

In recent years we’ve seen Aston Villa and Newcastle United pose threats, and David Moyes is now eager to follow that example.

But the Toffees’ squad will need several additions this summer to make that a reality.

And perhaps the most important signing the club will make this summer is a new number nine.

Liam Delap is again being linked with Everton. However, a new report has cast doubt on a swoop, suggesting Everton could go down a different route.

Support for Liam Delap swoop not universal within Everton

Delap has long been on Everton’s radar.

Moyes wanted the striker last summer after his successful campaign with Ipswich Town, but missed out to Chelsea.

Delap, though, looks like he could move on this summer after one season with the Blues.

Everton are in the picture, but The i Paper say that support for a Liam Delap bid this summer is not unanimous within the club’s hierarchy.

His first season at Chelsea has caused some to view him as a red flag.

Those not on board believe the club could be more likely to turn to the European market again, due to ‘inflated’ Premier League prices.

Of course, Everton went down this route last summer when they signed Thierno Barry from Villarreal.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out yet for Barry at Everton, although there is still optimism that he can make a success of his move.

But it looks as though Everton may resist temptation to swoop for Delap this summer after his struggles at Chelsea.

Back in February though, it was suggested Chelsea could loan Delap out, so that would perhaps lessen the risk for Everton.

But Everton still ought to be bringing in someone who’s really impressed this term and has proven himself at the top level.

Ultimately, Everton are fairly good defensively these days, which was perhaps to be expected with Moyes in charge.

So adding a top, proven goalscorer really is of the essence.

If Everton can do that, and also land two solid full-backs, the whole complexion will change.
