Southampton players make passionate fans plea ahead of clash at St Mary’s against Ipswich

Southampton fans will hope they can transform St. Mary’s into a cauldron of noise to get their promotion-chasing team over the line against Ipswich Town.

Wembley was taken over by a sea of yellow and blue on Saturday, as the Southampton masses descended onto the home of football in great numbers.

Fans and players alike were donning yellow to commemorate the club’s proud FA Cup winners in 1976, but the Saints would unfortunately come up short on the pitch, in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss.

Still, not even the stinging nature of the semi-final defeat can take away from how raucous the Southampton support was, as the City fans were completely silent when Finn Azaz slammed home the outrageous opener.

Southampton’s very own yellow wall

Southampton fans flocked to London in their thousands, hopeful that their promotion-chasing side in the Championship could go against the expected script of Pep Guardiola’s men winning comfortably.

In total, 35,000 Saints supporters packed out Wembley, and they could certainly be heard when Azaz curled a terrific effort past James Trafford to break the deadlock.

They never stopped backing their side, even when it became clear that City would finish the match as 2-1 victors, with Southampton star, Leo Scienza, making his feelings known at the full-time whistle, as to how much he appreciated the rowdy support.

Scienza, who has 17 goal contributions next to his name in the Championship this season, couldn’t quite hurt City on the pitch, but he was still thankful for the backing he received, noting that the Saints fans were “unbelievable”.

With Eckert also noting that the support inside Wembley was “outstanding”, the hope will be that this same level of boisterous noise can be heard on Tuesday evening, as another huge game in Southampton’s season appears on the calendar.

Southampton will need their supporters again

The Saints players will be desperately hoping their loyal fanbase has some more energy in reserve, as Tuesday night’s clash with Ipswich is another monumental showdown.

If Southampton were to win, they’d be only one point off entering the Championship automatic promotions, heading into what could be a crazy final day of the season.

Ipswich will be looking to silence the expectant Saints fans; on the contrary, with a win for the Suffolk side killing the host’s chances of a late surge into the top two.

It really does have all the makings of being an enthralling Championship classic on Tuesday night, with the Southampton players needing their set of passionate fans to turn up once more, to intimidate Kieran McKenna’s visitors.

The game is completely sold out now, so a cauldron of noise that could rival even Wembley might be in store.

With 12 wins from a possible 22 on their own patch this season, and a 20-game unbeaten streak intact, until they just narrowly lost to Guardiola and Co, Southampton will be confident they can take the automatic promotion race to the final day.

Even if they were to lose, the Southampton masses won’t be turning on their beloved team anytime soon, with a season that looked destined for a relegation battle under Will Still, transformed into a tussle for the top two spaces under Eckert.
