SAINTS have sealed the signing of young full-back Harris Afzal for their academy, beating interest from the likes of Rangers and Crystal Palace.
The 16 year old left-back joins from Scottish Championship side Queens Park this summer, and will initially link up with Andrew Surman’s under-18s.
Afzal signed his first contract at Queens Park and has featured on the bench for their first team in both the league and a Scottish Cup trip to Rangers.
With the next step of his career now secured, he said: “I’m really excited. It’s something that I’ve always wanted, to make a move to England.
“It’s good that the hard work’s paying off now. When I came down, I thought it was a really good atmosphere. I liked all the lads and the coaches.
“I thought it was a really good set-up, where I can see myself progressing.”
Director of group talent strategy, Andy Goldie, added: “Harris has consistently demonstrated qualities that we believe will enhance our under-18s squad.
“We will provide him with a platform to continue his development when he joins us in the summer. His trajectory in recent seasons has been impressive.
“At Queens Park, he’s featured around their first team squad and subsequently attracted a lot of interest, so we’re excited to welcome him and support his continued progress at Staplewood.”
