Azaz fires Southampton into Championship play-off places

SAINTS trio Ryan Manning, Finn Azaz and Shea Charles saw their World Cup hopes ended by defeats in qualification semi-finals on Thursday evening.

Republic of Ireland lost to the Czech Republic on penalties, while Northern Ireland’s fate was sealed by a 2-0 regular-time defeat against Italy.

Azaz, having played 120 minutes, missed his spot kick, as did Middlesbrough’s Alan Browne, as Ireland blew a two-goal lead in Prague.

Both he and Manning started for The Boys in Green as they shot to a 2-0 lead through Troy Parrott and a Matej Kovar own goal inside 25 minutes.

But Ireland were unable to hold on in extra time, with Wolves man Ladislav Krejci levelling late for the hosts after Manning was withdrawn.

Teammate Charles’ hopes of reaching this summer’s tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico were ended by a 2-0 defeat to Italy a little earlier.

The midfielder was unable to help his side to a surprise victory in Bergamo, and now faces an unwanted game against fellow losers Wales.

Manning and Azaz will also remain on international duty and face North Macedonia in Dublin on Tuesday, March 31.

Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz has already completed his international duties, playing 45 minutes of Israel’s 2-2 draw in Georgia.

That was his country’s only fixture in this window, meaning he could be back in Saints training as early as Monday’s session in front of fans at St Mary’s.

Those not away on international duty are prepping for next Saturday’s home FA Cup quarter-final against Premier League leaders Arsenal.
