Sheffield United Midfielder Urged To Leave This Summer By Former Blades Player

Sheffield United midfielder Gus Hamer will leave in this window, former player Lee Hendrie believes.

Sheffield United face a battle to keep hold of the player this summer. SUFC are gearing up for another year in the Championship.

Hamer, 28, has been a key player for the Blades since joining them in 2023. He is under contract at Bramall Lane until June 2027.

Hendrie has said, as per a report by Football League World: “I just think he’s shown consistency, and he’s been one of the key players for some time at Sheffield United. Playing in the Premier League is the ultimate for most players, and with Sheffield United not getting promoted [last season], you now have to look at the standouts such as Hamer, who would continue to be a standout in the Championship if he stays. That’s the disappointment for Sheffield United.”

He added: “I think he goes. I know he’s been linked with PSV, but it wouldn’t surprise me if one of the bottom-end Premier League sides tried to sign him. He’s shown good talent at both Sheffield United and Coventry, so it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if he’s out of the door in the summer.”

Sheffield United will be desperate to keep hold of Hamer. SUFC may face interest in him from elsewhere though over the next couple of months.

The Blades snapped him up two years ago to boost their squad. He has since made 84 appearances in all competitions and has scored 15 goals, 10 of which came in the last campaign.

He started his career at Feyenoord before moving on to PEC Zwolle on a permanent basis after a loan spell at FC Dordrecht as a youngster. The former Holland youth international then moved to England in 2020.

Hamer spent three years with the Sky Blues and was one of their most prized assets. The Brazil-born man found the net on 19 occasions in 132 outings.

What now for Sheffield United?

Sheffield United will want to keep hold of their main players. However, as Hendrie alluded to, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hamer leave SUFC to play at a higher level.

The Blades have turned to Ruben Selles as their new head coach ahead of next term. The former Southampton and Reading man was sacked by fellow second tier side Hull City last month.

Chris Wilder was given the chop after his team were beaten in the play-off final by Sunderland at Wembley. The South Yorkshire outfit have since brought in Selles and he has delved into the market to sign defender Tyler Bindon on loan from Nottingham Forest.
