23-Year-Old Defender Joined On A Free To Sign New Contract At Sheffield Wednesday

Di’Shon Bernard has signed a new deal with Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday may have made their best signing of the summer so far after reaching a new agreement with centre-back Di’Shon Bernard.

The 23-year-old joined on a free transfer last summer and went on to feature 32 times in the Championship, winning over the hearts of Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Bernard’s contract expired on June 30th when he was away in USA competing in Copa America with Jamaica.

Bernard technically became a free agent and there was a lot of uncertainty over his future, with reports that Bernard had widespread transfer interest from elsewhere.

Earlier this week, Sheffield Wednesday fans assumed that Bernard was leaving S6 for good, after Bernard posted a picture of some suitcases on social media, with the caption ‘Ready for the next chapter’.

It proved to be a joke, with Bernard saying after signing his new Sheffield Wednesday deal:

“It was a little teaser, to show them that I was coming, which I think some took positive, some took negative. But we’re here now.”

Since, Bernard has taken to Instagram once more, this time making a ‘suitcases’ joke after putting pen-to-paper at Hillsborough.

Bernard is technically the Owls’ 10th signing of the summer, in what is proving to be a very fruitful summer for manger Danny Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri, who’s earning rare praise from Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Sheffield Wednesday are enjoying arguably their most exciting summer transfer window of Chansiri’s nine-year tenure so far.

And Bernard returning to the club is another incredible move for Rohl and his team.

The delay in Bernard’s return suggests that he wanted to weigh up his option and see how Sheffield Wednesday shaped up for the upcoming 2024/25 Championship season.

And the fact that he’s now returned suggests that Bernard believes the club are going places.

Sheffield Wednesday have a newfound pulling power in the transfer market and the more players of Bernard’s ilk that joins this summer, the more attractive it then becomes to other players who Rohl wants to sign.

For Sheffield Wednesday, things are definitely looking up, and with a few more new signings, the Owls could genuinely become dark horses in the race for promotion next season.
