According to agent Mark Bartelstein, the Spurs and center Zach Collins have reached an agreement on a $35MM, two-year deal extension. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN has confirmed this.
Collins, who turns 26 the next month, just completed his healthiest season in the previous four. In 2022–2023, he played in 63 games (26 starts) for San Antonio, averaging 11.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 22.9 minutes per contest while shooting a respectable.518/.374/.761 from the field.
Collins, the 10th overall choice in the 2017 draft, showed some early promise while playing for Portland, but ankle issues restricted him to only 11 games in 2019–20 and kept him out the whole next season (2020–21).
Collins obtained a three-year, $22MM deal with the Spurs in 2021 when he joined as a free agency, but it was only fully guaranteed for the first full season, with a partial guarantee in year two and a non-guaranteed third year. The former Gonzaga star only participated in 28 games in his first season in San Antonio, but his career’s greatest year—’22–’23—put him in a position to continue to play for the club once his current contract expires.
This autumn, Collins is expected to start for the Spurs alongside Victor Wembanyama as the team attempts to preserve the health of its prized rookie by having him play at power forward rather than center.
