One Premier League star has just become available for free, and he could prove to be a top option for Wrexham this summer.
Wrexham are gearing up for the 2025/26 Championship season, with owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney showing clear intent to back Phil Parkinson financially this summer.
After three successive promotions, Wrexham have risen to the Championship; however, Parkinson is not keen to let loyalties get in the way of his decision-making. The Wrexham boss has already decided that Paul Mullin isn’t part of his plans, whilst fellow striker Steven Fletcher was let go following the conclusion of his contract.
Although Wrexham have brought in Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle, there is still a hole in the forward line that Parkinson will be keen to fill.
Free agents are likely to be the path that Wrexham will go down this summer to bring in players, and they could very well spot one recently released Premier League star who would transform the team.
Wrexham should target recently released Newcastle United ace Callum Wilson
Parkinson will be keen to further bolster his attacking options this summer, so with that, there is every chance that Wrexham could easily identify recently released Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson as an option this summer.
Wilson, 33, has been a formidable forward in the Premier League in recent years, having notched 88 Premier League goals in 239 appearances for Newcastle United and Bournemouth collectively.
On top of that, the Coventry-born striker has made his name for England, bagging two goals in the Gareth Southgate reign.
Following five seasons on Tyneside with Newcastle, he has been released from the Premier League side, making him available on a free transfer this summer.
The one stumbling block that Wrexham may face in any potential Callum Wilson deal
Whilst Wilson will be available for free, there is no doubt that he will have many interested clubs, particularly from abroad.
On top of that, his wages may be quite sizeable, especially for a Championship club like Wrexham to match.
It would take an incredibly ambitious offer for Wrexham to bring in Wilson from the Premier League, but we have seen Red Dragons owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney pull off the unthinkable with deals before. Hopefully, they can back Phil Parkinson to the end and provide him with an experienced and prolific goalscorer like Wilson, something that would set them up perfectly for the 2025/26 Championship season.
Wilson has proven to be an ‘incredible talent’, as said by Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, and there is no doubt that the forward still has that in his locker.
