A scenario where the Charlotte Hornets are in a position to trade several players throughout the season is quite plausible. Even though it is very doubtful that the Hornets would trade any of their more well-known players, Gordon Hayward has lately been suggested as a potential acquisition for an Eastern Conference contender.
Michael Saenz of Sir Charles in Charge named Hayward as one of the six feasible trade targets for the New York Knicks. Hayward may still have a significant impact as a complimentary player on an established club, even if his days as a major option for an important squad are firmly in the past.
“Hayward on the Hornets as the No. 1 or No. 2 option may not move the needle much but as the third or fourth option for a playoff contender, that could certainly be a legit threat to make some noise in the Eastern Conference. Considering the Hornets are likely in the midst of a rebuild, I find it hard to imagine that the asking price for Hayward wouldn’t be large. It’s certainly a pairing that could work, even if it is just for one season.”
Although no precise trade package is discussed, it is made clear that the asking price would not be too expensive. Charlotte may still find a way to come out on the other side with some advantages, even if this would undoubtedly help the Knicks.
The Hornets don’t really have championship expectations for either this year or the next year. But in order for it to become a possibility, they will need to give their younger players enough playing time so that their growth can proceed at a reasonable pace. If Hayward is still on the roster, he will have to compete for minutes with guys who are at least ten years his junior.
