Three Important Features In Birmingham City’s New Amazon Prime Documentary

Birmingham City’s 2024/25 season has captured the imagination of many in the Second City, as well as across the country and even further afield.

Entertainment value at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park has skyrocketed ever since Tom Wagner’s takeover of the club in July 2023, with the hedge-fund investor quick to bring NFL legend Tom Brady on board as a minority shareholder.

However, the past nine months in particular has brought mass attention to the blue half of Brum, with Chris Davies’ side’s performances analysed to the maximum by outsiders as a result of a multitude of high-profile sponsorship deals, as well as a League One-high spending spree across two transfer windows as the club’s well-documented major rebuild began.

It has already been a record-breaking season for Birmingham during Davies’ first season as a number-one in the dugout, and Bluenoses will be able to bask in the glory of their achievements across the summer as the club confirmed that an Amazon Prime Video documentary will be released in the summer as they prepare for life back in the Championship and beyond.

There have been plenty of standout moments this season, and with that in mind, FLW have picked out three we cannot wait to see in the behind-the-scenes docuseries.

3. Birmingham City 3-1 Wrexham

Blues emerge victorious in ‘Hollywood’ showdown

The first standout encounter of Blues’ season came against Wrexham on Monday, September 16th, with eyes cast on the ‘Hollywood’ showdown across the nation and in America.

Unsurprisingly, Wagner and Brady were joined by Red Dragons ownership duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, as well as a host of ex-footballing stars such as Gary Neville and David Beckham and a whole host of TV personalities.

This provided extra spice to what was already an important clash in terms of the season’s overall context, with Phil Parkinson’s side making an impressive start to life back in League One, whilst Blues had recorded three wins and a draw in their opening four games.

Jack Marriott gave the North Wales outfit the lead after two minutes after Davies’ side were unable to clear Eoghan O’Connell’s dangerous set-piece. But, the pendulum well and truly swung in the hosts’ favour after restoring parity with Jay Stansfield’s first goal of the season as he followed up Alfie May’s initial effort to stab the ball past Arthur Okonkwo.

The vast majority of a sell-out 27,980 crowd would go home happy as the former Exeter City man headed home a sublime Alex Cochrane cross seven minutes into the second period, before fellow Deadline Day signing Tomoki Iwata netted his first in royal blue with a shot that arrowed straight into the bottom right-hand corner.

Speaking to CBS Sports a day later, Beckham stated: “I’ve not seen an atmosphere like that for a long time where Birmingham and Wrexham fans were incredible.”

2. Birmingham City 2-3 Newcastle United

Davies’ side run EFL Cup winners mighty close at St Andrew’s

Although Birmingham couldn’t cause a major FA Cup upset on the scoreboard against Newcastle United in the Fourth Round, Davies’ side and the club as a whole showcased their potential on a pulsating night in Small Heath in front of the BBC Sport cameras.

Coming into the game, Eddie Howe’s eventual EFL Cup winners had booked their Wembley place by dismantling Arsenal in the semi-finals, whilst Blues hadn’t lost in all competitions since November 23rd.

However, a much-changed Magpies XI were in for an almighty shock as Ethan Laird smashed home Keshi Anderson’s knockdown from close range inside the first minute, sparking scenes of jubilation inside the home quarters of the famous old stadium.

Newcastle’s top-flight nous would then come to the fore in controversial fashion as Joe Willock netted an equaliser which was adjudged to have gone over Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s goal-line amid no goal-line technology, before the experienced Callum Wilson tapped home Will Osula’s initial mishap.

However, a crowd of 27,914 were treated to one of the best FA Cup goals for many a year as Marc Leonard’s initial cross was cleared only as far as Iwata, who returned it in stunning fashion as the Japanese midfielder’s strike rocketed past Nick Pope.

The contest continued with plenty of strong challenges flying in from Davies’ rearguard, before Willock eventually saw the Geordies into Round Five as he sent a low effort under the legs of Peacock-Farrell with eight minutes to go.

Regardless of the defeat, it was one of two occasions this season where the third-tier side have gone toe-to-toe with Premier League opposition, in what was St Andrew’s biggest occasion for many a year.

Birmingham City’s 24/25 FA Cup Run Score
Sutton United (A) 0-1
Blackpool (A) 1-2
Lincoln City (H) 2-1
Newcastle United (H) 2-3

1. Jay Stansfield signs on a permanent basis

Forward rejoins permanently as League One transfer record smashed

Unsurprisingly, the scenario which tops the list is the club and divisional-record capture of Stansfield on a seven-year contract from Fulham on Deadline Day last August.

The England Under-21 international netted 12 goals and scooped all five end-of-season awards during his loan spell from Craven Cottage, which led to mass speculation regarding his next move from the very beginning of the transfer window.

It was initially reported that Blues were preparing a package of up to £6m to prize away the 22-year-old despite their relegation, before seeing a bid worth as much as £10m rejected by the West London side in the late hours of Deadline Day.

However, that didn’t deter the ambitious Wagner, who was able to strike a deal for the striker, who has since netted over 20 goals this season on a seven-year contract.

The American would also drop the almighty bombshell with an incredible tease on the club’s official X account, with Stansfield given a heroes’ reception ahead of the club’s 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic the following day.
