They can’t…Simon Jordan Not Happy At Birmingham City Owners Despite Setting New EFL Record

Birmingham City have dominated League One this season, but Simon Jordan isn’t overly impressed by the Blues.

Birmingham City were crowned league champions in mid-April and have since gone on to etch their names into the history books.

Wolverhampton Wanderers previously had the record for most points in a League One season with 103.

However, Birmingham broke Wolves’ record after beating Mansfield Town last Sunday.

They then had their sights on an overall EFL record when they took to the pitch earlier this week.

Simon Jordan says Birmingham shouldn’t have been in League One

The Blues beat Blackpool 2-0 on April 30, taking their tally to the season up to 108 with a game to spare.

Previously, it was Reading who held the record for most points in a single EFL campaign, earning 106 back in 2005/06 when they were in the Championship.

Birmingham have broken that record and could end 2024/25 with 111 points to their name.

But speaking on talkSPORT about the record this week, Simon Jordan was not impressed, suggesting the club should never have been in League One in the first place and ‘they can’t pat themselves on the back’.

He said: “I think you can only win the league that you’re in, and they won it with a remarkable return.

“But they have spent 30 odd million pounds, which probably equates to a significant proportion of the entire spend of that league.

“They shouldn’t have been in that league in the first place, they are too big a club, I know that sounds a bit wrong to say that. But they shouldn’t, they can’t pat themselves on the back for being responsible for getting the club relegated from the Championship when not so long ago they were a Premier League side.

“Reading won the Championship, the Championship is the most difficult, universally accepted, one of the most difficult leagues in world football, the most competitive league in world football

“And that was the season that my team were in that league, and we were expected to go back up as opposed to getting relegated the previous season, so I know how good Reading were.

“So it’s not a fair comparison, but they have held order, but to spend the kind of money they spent, I would think that that’s a fair return for the investment.”

Birmingham to flex financial muscle in Championship

Attention has now turned toward the Championship and the 2025 summer transfer window.

Birmingham will be aggressive in the transfer market as they look to secure back-to-back promotions.

A record signing could be on the cards for the Midlands outfit as well, who broke the League One record last summer when they signed Jay Stansfield.

Meanwhile, Birmingham can offer £30,000-a-week to new players as they aim to attract the cream of the crop in the Championship.
