Stoke City Exiled Forward Ready For A Return To Action After Five months

Stoke City exile Ryan Mmaee is finally back in full training as he bids to make his Rapid Vienna debut some five months after signing on loan.

The 27-year-old striker made the move in early September but hasn’t been able to get on the pitch yet in Austria after back-to-back thigh injuries, which had been a problem for him last season too after joining Stoke from Ferencvaros.

The Vienna press claim that the club has been “particularly cautious” about testing his body in training but Kurier report that he “could not and did not want to be held back any longer”. It adds: “He has promptly shown why those in charge are convinced about the loan deal even after five months without playing.”

Rapid midfielder Dion Beljo said: “Ryan has a special flair in his game, very interesting.”

Donis Avdijaj, who played alongside Mmaee in Cyprus for Limassol and is now in the Austrian Bundesliga with Hartberg, told the paper: “He was our best player in attack.”

Mmaee made his senior breakthrough in Belgium with Standard Liege and played for Beveren and Aarhus, in Denmark, before moving to Cyprus then Hungary, where he was snapped up by Stoke in the summer of 2023. He is under contract at the bet365 Stadium until 2026.

Rapid are third, eight points behind league leaders Sturm Graz, and are next in action on Saturday, February 1 at home against Armstetten.
