Southampton forward makes ‘spit’ allegation after heated Portsmouth battle

Southampton draw at Portsmouth after taking second-half lead | Daily Echo
Pompey earned a 1-1 draw against Southampton on Sunday in the latest south-coast derby at Fratton Park.

Southampton forward Leo Scienza has claimed he was spat at during Sunday’s south-coast derby draw at Fratton Park.

It was an enthralling affair between the two fierce rivals, which lived up the billing after an underwhelming meeting back in September at St Mary’s.

20,290 supporters packed into Fratton and made their voices heard throughout as John Mousinho’s men came from behind to earn a point and continue their good run of form in the Championship.

The Blues did fall behind 12 minutes into the second half, with Scienza slotting past Nicolas Schmid before running the entirety of the pitch in front of the North Stand to celebrate with the travelling fans.

Despite netting the opener, the winger was withdrawn soon after due to injury, with his strike representing the last of his action during his second south-coast derby outing.

Southampton man reveals alleged ‘spit’ after Pompey battle

The intensity of the contest was there for all to see, with strong tackles and heated-exchanges taking place throughout the afternoon.

However, Scienza has insisted one action overstepped the mark as the Saints claimed a 1-1 draw on enemy territory.

The 27-year-old has alleged he was spat at by a supporter as he went to collect a ball in the first half and claimed he was pulled at various points in the contest.

In a heated message on his Instagram, the Southampton forward said: ‘In the first half went there about 3 times to get a ball, got spit, got pulled and they throw the ball away just for fun.

‘Then I scored a goal, also wanted to have some fun and just give them the love back. Fair play.’

South-coast derby operation branded a ‘success’ by Police

Temperatures flared both on and off the pitch as Pompey welcomed their bitter rivals for the first league contest at Fratton in 15 years.

Five arrests were made in and around the ground during the afternoon, with very-little sign of major trouble despite heavy police presence.

And Chief Superintendent Simon Dodds, Gold Commander for the policing operation, admitted it was a ‘successful operation’ and praised both clubs for their involvement in keeping the game safe,

He said: ‘From our policing perspective this has been another successful operation with the match passing without any major disruption. I’m also glad the fans got some goals to celebrate this time around.

‘My thanks go to both football clubs and their fans, for once again supporting our operation and helping to ensure the safety of all those involved.

‘I’m also incredibly proud of my officers and staff. They showed real professionalism and dedication throughout the day and their efforts played a key part in keeping people safe.’
