Manager Russell Martin has backed forward Cameron Archer to “take off” once he scores his first Premier League goal for Saints.
Archer had chances against Ipswich to open his league account for Southampton but was unable to find a way past Arijanet Muric.
He notably struck the post from a tight angle after doing well to take the ball wide of Muric before also seeing an effort well saved in the second half.
Archer’s best chance to score this season came from the spot against Manchester United but he saw his effort saved by Andre Onana.
Despite failing to score, Martin remains impressed by what the 22 year old offers Saints with his movement and pace.
Martin told the Daily Echo: “I think Cam needs to get his first (Premier League) goal. He had chances.
“He was such a threat. When he gets that first goal, I think he will really take off. We need to keep doing what we are doing.
“We just need to keep getting better and better and it will come.”
Archer, who joined Southampton from boyhood club Aston Villa during the summer, has already scored twice this season.
He hit a double against Cardiff City in a thrilling 5-3 Carabao Cup last month on what was his first start fo the club.
