South Sydney Rabbitohs battle for reinstatement and the moment they returned

The Rabbitohs’ fight for reinstatement remains one of the most defining moments in our Club’s long history, a victory that restored South Sydney to its rightful place in the National Rugby League and united an entire community.

In 2001, the Full Bench of the Federal Court upheld the Club’s appeal against exclusion from the competition, ruling that South Sydney’s removal had breached the Trade Practices Act. It was a landmark decision that overturned one of the most controversial chapters in Australian Rugby League and cleared the way for the Rabbitohs’ return.

At the South Sydney Leagues Club, the announcement triggered unforgettable scenes. Thousands of Members and supporters gathered to hear the result, erupting into celebration as the news spread. Chants, cheers, and tears filled the room — and a simple message soon appeared on T-shirts across Sydney: “We’re Back!”

The Rabbitohs’ 2001 reinstatement followed a two-year fightback sparked by the Club’s removal at the end of the 1999 season, when the NRL reduced the competition from 22 to 14 teams after the Super League war. Rugby League lost its presence in both South Australia and Western Australia, several Sydney clubs were forced into mergers, and pressure mounted for South Sydney to do the same. The Rabbitohs refused, standing firm in defence of their identity and independence.

The Federal Court’s ruling brought that fight to an end. South Sydney was officially invited to rejoin the NRL for the 2002 season.

And in returning, the Club emerged stronger than ever, united by the conviction that South Sydney’s place in the game had been earned since 1908, and would forever endure.
