It has been a rough few days for Dawn Staley and her South Carolina Gamecocks. With a chance to win back-to-back titles and third in four years, the Gamecocks were obliterated on the big stage by the UConn Huskies, losing 82-59.
It was a tough day offensively for South Carolina, who made just 34.4% of its shots from the field while needing someone to step up on that end of the floor. One candidate for that production was also a fan favorite that many felt could have a larger role off of the bench was MiLaysia Fulwiley.
A sentiment that Fulwiley possibly agreed with, as it was revealed on Friday by Lulu Kesin of The Greenville News, she has decided to transfer.
It’s a revelation that has many fans blaming Staley for not utilizing Fulwiley more.
“Time for her to be the superstar she can.. SC will always be Dawn Staley first, players second,” wrote one user.
“Fulwiley going into the portal is on Dawn Staley for not utilizing her right. There is no good reason Milaysia should’ve been coming off the bench. Your top two scorers were bench players that’s a problem,” pointed out another.
“Best thing she could’ve done! Dawn Staley wasted this girl talent for 2 years! She’s a superstar & had her coming off the bench smh,” commented one user.
“I was wondering how long Milaysia Fulwiley was gonna sit behind guards that can’t beat her on anyday Complete misuse of Talent by Dawn Staley,” said one fan.
“She to good to be coming off the bench for 3 years,” added another. Aside from a fluctuating role, the move also comes after South Carolina landed Florida State transfer Ta’Niya Latson, who led the nation in scoring this past season.
Fulwiley is expected to be one of the most sought-after players in the portal, and could have some of the biggest programs in the country after her.
