South Carolina announced the signing Thursday of incoming freshman wing Agot Makeer.
Makeer is a five-star recruit ranked No. 6 in the espnW 100 2025 HoopGurls Recruiting Rankings. She initially committed to South Carolina back on March 1.
“We’re excited to bring Agot into our Gamecock family,” Dawn Staley said in a news release. “She brings size, speed and versatility to our guard unit with her ability to play multiple positions. Her ball handling and passing skills enhance her ability to score and spread the defense. Agot is super competitive, talented and has an unlimited ceiling.”
Makeer, listed at 6-foot-1 from Ontario, Canada, is the fourth member of the Gamecocks’ 2025 recruiting class as it stands. She joins fellow freshman Ayla McDowell and incoming transfers Ta’Niya Latson and Madina Okot.
Here are three quick things to know about Makeer:
McDonald’s All-American
Opposing coaches in the SEC need to watch out. Staley is adding another McDonald’s All-American to her roster.
Makeer played on Team East in the game and tallied seven points, four rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes of action. She faced off with McDowell, who scored 10 points for Team West — though McDowell’s team ultimately won 104-82. Makeer also participated in the 3-point contest.
Makeer was named to the All-American squad after averaging 10.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game for Montverde Academy last season. She helped Montverde to 25-1 regular-season record and a runner-up finish at the Chipotle High School National Championships.
Before moving to Montverde she played at Crestwood Prep in Ontario. Crestwood went undefeated during her junior season and claimed the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association championship. Makeer averaged 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds that season.
South Carolina had 10 former McDonald’s All-Americans on the roster for the 2024-25 season.
International experience
Makeer already has international experience under her belt. She is a Fargo, North Dakota native who was raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario in Canada.
Last summer she helped Canada clinch a silver medal at the FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup. The silver medal was a new best in the program’s history.
Makeer averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.3 assists in the tournament. She recorded a 10 point, 10 rebound double-double in the game that clinched silver for Canada. Makeer was named to the tournament’s All-Star Five for her efforts.
Nike Hoop Summit with future teammate Makeer participated in the Nike Hoop Summit alongside fellow Gamecocks signee McDowell a few weeks ago.
Both Makeer and McDowell were members of the World Team. The two combined for 16 points in the World Team’s 90-78 loss to Team USA.
Makeer started for the World team and finished with five points, two assists and a block in 16 minutes of action. McDowell finished with 11 points, four rebounds, one assists and one steal in 19 minutes off the bench.
