Jamie Redknapp was shocked that Aston Villa didn’t end up playing against 10 men at Ipswich Town.
Villa have played out a 2-2 draw at Portman Road but there was a key moment when they led at 2-1 in the 70th minute, just before Liam Delap got his second goal of the afternoon to equalise.
Ipswich captain Sam Morsy was already on a booking when he lunged into a challenge on Jaden Philogene and tempted referee Stuart Atwell to dip back into his pocket for another card. None came. Morsy, who had been cautioned for a foul on Morgan Rogers, had been already been warned again for a foul on Youri Tielemans.
Redknapp, watching on for Sky Sports, said: “That (first yellow card) is not a great tackle. You know what you’re doing there, kicking him in the back of the foot, and the second one he definitely goes over the top of the ball. It’s an accumulation. After the first you cannot afford to make that challenge.
“It’s definitely a second yellow and you can see why Aston Villa are so upset. I think he’s really, really lucky.”
Former Villa man Ashley Young could see Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna squirming in the home technical area when Morsy had made the challenge.
Young said: “He’s treading a thin line and I think you could see Kieran McKenna was worried on the sidelines. He goes in to make that challenge and you think to yourself, ‘You’ve been booked already, you need to take your time.’ It was worrying for Kieran but the referee didn’t send him off and they were lucky.”
