Sheffield Wednesday Issue Raised Involving Dejphon Chansiri Amid Club Sale

Dejphon Chansiri’s time as Sheffield Wednesday owned has been marked by continuous issues and controversy.

One of the latest issues arose when Wednesday were placed under a registration embargo in November due to an outstanding HM Revenue and Customs bill – a repeat of the same incident a year prior.

That bill was settled, and further punishment avoided, but it has understandably sparked further protests from supporters.

When we asked our Owls Fan Pundit, Patrick, about the biggest issue facing his club at the moment. Chansiri’s ownership was predictably high on the list.

Chansiri holding back Wednesday, says Fan Pundit

Speaking to Football League World, Patrick said: “So, if you’re looking at the club’s biggest issue at this moment in time, it’s still the same person, and the issue is Dejphon Chansiri.

“Because you could look at something smaller in isolation and say, ‘yeah, you know, the defending’s been poor this season’, or whatever.

“But all the issues stem from Chansiri, so you have to look at that and focus on that and, you just have to keep up the pressure on Chansiri to sell up and go.

“So yeah, in the ten years he’s been here, he’s wasted his money and he’s made everything worse. And there’s this season, still, the club, it’s just ran completely hand to mouth and I think people don’t maybe realise how precarious this situation is.

“There’s a mortgage on the ground which he hasn’t paid, he’s not paying interest on, so that’s rolling on.

“And still, the January transfer window was being funded by ridiculous early-bird season ticket money.

“Then, for the past few years, once it gets to September, October time, when a tax bills there. Yet again, 2024, couldn’t pay the tax bill so [the club was placed under another] embargo.

“So, you just have to remember that, as it stands, expect more embargoes, expect more issues with paying bills.

“And still, after all this time, there’s no structure at the club. So many people who have come in to work with them have left.

“There’s no structure at the club. No director of football, no CEO, and yeah, I know, we’ve got Danny Rohl, who’s doing his absolute best under the circumstances, but the issue is that Danny Rohl isn’t being backed and his ambition isn’t being matched.

“And people might think, ‘oh, that’s just the way it goes’, but once Danny Rohl goes, and it’s left again, Chansiri’s still here in charge, and he brings in another very average manager, as we’ve had a lot of them, pre-Danny Rohl.

“Yeah, then maybe things will start to hit home for those who are a bit blind to the issues under Chansiri.

“But yeah, as I mentioned, we have problems, at the back and in games, but if we had a manager who was backed, then maybe we’d have got those defensive replacements in.

“And what I think is still a huge issue is fan engagement as it just keeps getting worse and worse, as you’ve seen this season.

“This, in 2025, fans are still going to be priced out and that is going to cause a future issue when these fans maybe take a long time to return.

“But the issue is at the top. It stems from Chansiri, and he’s got to go.”

Rohl departure could be the final straw

The one bright spark for Wednesday in recent years – keeping them afloat in the Championship when the picture looked bleak last season – has been Rohl.

Against the odds, and despite a backdrop of off-field issues, the German coach has a side that looked almost certain for relegation at points last season, now not a million miles from the play-offs just over a year later.

Rohl’s record at Wednesday, as per Transfermarkt
Games 78
Win 31
Draw 15
Loss 32
Points per game 1.38

But with chat linking Rohl to jobs like Southampton – where he was an assistant coach a few years ago – his time at Hillsborough could soon be over.

If the mood feels sour at Wednesday right now, it could soon get a whole lot worse with a Rohl departure – and Chansiri would undoubtedly come in for even greater criticism.
