Ryan Carr Reflects on the Turning Points in Castleford Tigers’ Defeat to Wigan Warriors

REPORT: Wigan Warriors v Castleford Tigers
RYAN CARR believes moments either side of half-time cost Castleford Tigers in their opening game of the season. Castleford went down 26-16 to Wigan Warriors at the OneBore Stadium. The Tigers, despite conceding five tries, looked a much more stern defensive proposition than last year.

The 2026 Super League season got off to a challenging start for Castleford Tigers, as they fell to a 26-16 defeat at home to Wigan Warriors in their opening round fixture. While the scoreline eventually reflected a solid victory for the Warriors, head coach Ryan Carr was keen to emphasise that there were several pivotal moments that shaped the contest — both positive and negative — for his side.

From the outset, Carr’s Tigers showed a competitive spirit. After the hosts opened the scoring through Liam Hood’s early try, Castleford looked well-organised and committed in defence during the first half. At half-time, the contest was close — Wigan led narrowly — and Carr believed that the Tigers had acquitted themselves well over the opening period.

However, the second half proved to be a defining phase of the match. Carr identified two key moments either side of the half-time break as the turning points that ultimately swung momentum in Wigan’s favour. These moments allowed the Warriors to seize control of the encounter and increase the pressure on Castleford.

The first of these came shortly after the restart, when Wigan began to find space and tempo in attack. A try from Zack Eckersley early in the second half settled the visitors and dampened Castleford’s momentum. Eckersley’s line breaks and support play helped Wigan establish a grip on the match that the Tigers struggled to wrestle back.

Carr was candid in his assessment that moments like this exposed the Tigers’ inexperience and tactical naivety in certain stages. “We made it too hard on ourselves,” he said — a frank reflection that, had Castleford handled specific situations better, the latter stages of the game could have been much closer.

The second crucial turning point occurred soon after. Wigan continued to build pressure, and the hosts conceded territory and possession at critical junctures. This allowed the Warriors to score additional tries and extend their lead out of reach. Carr pointed to these phases as the moments when the game slipped away: good teams convert pressure into points, and Wigan did just that.

Despite the defeat, Carr was keen to highlight positives, particularly his team’s resilience in defence. Castleford defended for long periods, repelling sustained pressure close to their own line — something Carr believes will build belief as the season progresses.

However, he was also clear that this level of intensity and focus cannot be fleeting. “It’s not okay to give that [effort] just once and then turn the switch off,” Carr insisted, underscoring the need for consistency from his squad.

Late tries from Mikaele Ravalawa and George Lawler gave the final scoreline a semblance of respectability, but Carr’s takeaway from the match remained centred on managing key moments better — especially in the first 10 minutes after the break. If the Tigers can iron out those critical errors, Carr hinted, they could be a much tougher proposition in the weeks ahead.
